E-Newsletter December 2009
19 Jan, 2010
Editor’s Note
Year 2009 has been a mixture of sadness with the untimely demise of Dr. Yang Yi and good news of the increasing contribution of fisheries to the food basket in many countries. In 2010 we face more challenges for the sustainable management of the capture fisheries and aquaculture sectors. Let us brace ourselves to address the challenges and bringing fisheries in to the Global Warming and Climate Change discussions. I wish all members of AFS a very happy, healthy and productive 2010.
Message from the AFS President – Prof. Ida Siason
Dear AFS members,
In the midst of the Christmas Season and with 2010 upon us, I wish you all a rejuvenating holiday and a hopeful start for a productive New Year!
To indulge in the tradition of looking forward at the eve of the New Year, allow me to express my thoughts. My wish for AFS is that we engage in fruitful preparations for the April 21-25, 2011 Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (AFAF 2011) in Shanghai, be it in accomplishing research for presentation, in seeking means to attend this Forum, and forwarding innovative ideas to make this a truly significant event for the Fisheries Sector. But just as important is the aspiration that AFS can engage in initiatives that will continue to strengthen the Society, such as: growth in active membership, increased efficiency of our Secretariat to respond to the challenges ahead, our aspiration for the AFS Journal to be covered by the Science Citation Index, effective birthing of the Fisheries Social Science Research Section, and other ideas that the Council brings to the table.
Members can immediately look forward to a more informative AFS website (www.asianfisheriessociety.org), which is now being improved. We also ask members to forward to us any change in email addresses, from those previously supplied to the AFS, to ensure that you receive communications from the Secretariat, such as in the egroup.
Happy New Year to all!
Ida Siason, December 28, 2009
Message from Immediate Past President and Chair of AFS Awards Committee - Dr. Chan-Lui Lee
Dear AFS members,
It is my pleasure to update members and friends on the latest developments in the Society.
Prof Ida Siason, the Vice-President and Councilor from the Philippines had been appointed as the AFS President effective from the 1st September 2009. She took-over from the late Prof Yangyi who passed away at the end of July this year. Dr Derek Staples, the in-coming president is also the Vice-President.
Two major activities were finalized since the last e-Newsletter.
Firstly, the 9th Asian Aquaculture and Fisheries Forum (9AFAF) has been confirmed and will be held in the Shanghai Ocean University (SHOU) new campus at Lingang City, Shanghai, China from the 21st – 25th April 2011. The six months delay is in consideration of the great volume of visitors that will descend on Shanghai for the World Expo 2010. In view of this, the Society was advised by the Shanghai Government that it is best to hold our forum after the Shanghai World Expo.
